My mom and I were looking all over for some good quality hot chocolate mix to get my dad for Christmas and we couldn’t find any, anywhere!! Yes maybe we were looking the weekend before Christmas…. but still. I was kind of shocked. So rather than driving all over to find some, I thought “why not make our own??”
I did a little research and you wont believe how easy it is!! Why haven’t I thought about this before?? You only need 4 simple ingredients and chances are, you might have them all in your house right now.
We made the classic version for my dad (aka not “healthified”) but there are some easy ways to make a couple swaps to make it a healthier version of hot cocoa. Even if you make the classic kind though, it is hands down better for you than the kind you buy pre-packaged because it doesn’t include any of the unnecessary added preservatives/chemicals that you get in the store bought kind!
You can also spice it up by added your own flavors to the cocoa mix! Add some ground candy canes to make it peppermint hot cocoa, or some cayenne pepper to make it spicy cocoa! The possibilities are endless. 🙂
- Instead of 3/4 cup white sugar use 3/4 cup coconut palm sugar (low glycemic index, plus adds a rich taste to the cocoa)
- Instead of 3 cups of nonfat milk powder use 3 cups of coconut milk powder for a non-dairy alternative
The instructions are so simple. Add milk powder, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt to a food processor and blend until a very fine powder forms and ingredients are well mixed.
Add 1/4 cup cocoa mix to 1 cup hot water. Top with marshmallows and enjoy!! 🙂
